En Latino América la medicina popular utiliza desde tiempos inmemoriables la luffa como purgante, vomitivo, antiasmático y diurético. Es conocida en estos países con el nombre de esponjilla. En Brasil se la conoce como cabacinho o casadores, y es considerada como un remedio universal contra el estreñimiento, el hinchamiento de los tejidos, los tumores y los edemas.
